Standards to better the breed...

Halo

*The Standards*

Welcome to" Lauris Standard Poodles".I have been involved in Standard Poodles for over 15  years. It simply began with a part time job at a grooming shop, and turned into a true passion. My beginning in Standard Poodles came from Cheryl Martin of "LauraMar". I never thought of myself as a "Poodle person", but after being introduced to her Standards I realized how special they are. It was from this point my education began.

I learned that Standards were not the "foo foos" they are most commonly stereotyped as.They are "real dogs" with superior intelligence and tremendous athletic abilities.Originally bred for water work (the reason for the continental / lion trim), Standards typically excel in numerous canine events. They are an extremely versatile breed. As I see it, "If you can train it..they can do it!". When asked about their best and worst quality, the reply would be the same....intelligence! When properly bred, Standard Poodles should be alert, sociable, and very quick learners. The problem? As eagerly as they learn good behaviors, they just as quickly pick up the bad.It is often said that Standard Poodles are much like having a five year old child, and it is best that they have responsible "parents" that will raise them correctly.

My involvement in owning and showing Standards has been a slow but steady climb.I decided early to be patient, take my time, and do it the "right way".During this time I did everything possible to educate myself on the breed.Cheryl Martin was my mentor, and gave me my first three dogs, Isis,Jesse, and Miranda.Later when Cheryl decided to take a break from breeding I received Nadya, my fourth Standard, from Christine Scruggs of "Tivin Standard Poodles", the rest is history. Many newcomers to breeding are very anxious and start breeding right away.I feel this is a bit premature.I believe you should get to know your breed, and the lines you are breeding from. This is the only way we can truly try to better the breed. Many mistakes are made when breeders only concentrate on the present. They do not realize how much the past can influence the future.

Although I take showing very seriously, I also believe in treating my dogs as family members.I limit the amount of dogs I have so I can spend time with them individually. They are taught manners at an early age, and are constant members of the household.I show and groom my dogs on my own. Although I would always like to do it myself, I realize how competitive the conformation ring can be,and I sometimes need a little help.Karin Berlind of "Karadale Miniature Poodles" put the final major on my "Jesse" to finish his championship.Later, she was accompanied by Dan Giles who gained three consecutive majors toward "Nadya's" championship. They also  have graciously presented my dogs at PCA (when I do not show myself).I thank them for their friendship, and wish them the best with their move to Florida.

I strive to breed dogs of the highest quality.Proper conformation, good health, and an even temperament are my goals. The most beautiful dogs in the world are nothing without sound personality and well being.Every litter is planned with quality in mind. All pups are bred to be show quality; however, that does not mean they are all required to go to show homes.I have no hesitations placing quality puppies in a loving pet home.I am more concerned about finding good families rather than gaining championships. Many people feel that "pet" means poor quality. There should be little difference between the dogs that excel in the show ring, and those that excel in the household. This "pet quality" idea simply allows breeders to slack on their efforts. There is a standard of the breed for a reason. If you are creating Standard Poodles you should strive to create the most perfect dog possible, whether they enter the show ring, or just lounge on the sofa.Granted there is no "perfect" dog, there should still be that goal in mind.My dogs carry lines from very prestigious Standard Poodles.I am proud of their heritage and hope to carry on the success through my personal efforts.
